We will cover the following subject areas:
Mathematics
The math section of the Compass Test measures a student’s ability to solve math problems. The math placement test includes questions in arithmetic, algebra, geometry, basic trigonometry, and statistics.
Students preparing to take math courses beyond Algebra II will be expected to work with standard mathematical notation and concepts. The mathematics test preparation course will introduce these symbols and terminologies and help you prepare for the expectations in geometry, advanced algebra, and coordinate geometry or trigonometry.
The lessons will cover;
- Arithmetic,
- Ratios and rates,
- Percentages,
- Fractions and decimals,
- Rational expressions
- Quadratic equations
- Pre-algebra,
- Algebra ii
- Pre-calculus,
- Calculus,
- Word problems,
- Geometry,
- Trigonometry,
- Coordinate geometry,
- Statistics and sets, among other math topics.
Our math compass tutors have taught math for many years. They have a strong foundation in math content to help students better understand math concepts that may not have been fully understood before.
The teachers offer in-depth explanations of math problems in a step-by-step process. They will prepare a student to achieve a perfect score and handle college algebra and trigonometry.
English-Grammar
The English section of the Compass Test measures a student’s ability to use language correctly and effectively, understand sentence meaning and manipulate sentence structure. The questions focus on;
- Identifying capitalization and punctuation errors,
- Correcting run-on sentences,
- Finding errors in comparisons and word choice, understanding the main idea and supporting details, and
- Recognizing a variety of other Basic English errors.
While this is not typically an area of difficulty for most students, we still provide solid instruction on all aspects of writing: grammar usage, mechanics, organization, support for ideas, sentence structure, and coherence.
Our English compass tutors have strong reading comprehension, creative writing, vocabulary development, and grammar usage. They will help you to;
- Understand how your writing can be improved through thorough editing.
- They will help identify any trouble areas you may not know about; run-on sentences, comma splices, or misused words.
- They will also give the student the confidence to answer anything related to writing.
Parents who wish their children to achieve high scores on this section should consider a private tutor to help their children understand the types of questions that will be asked and how best to approach them.

Writing
The writing section of the Compass Test is essentially an essay test. It includes both essay and short answer questions. Students will be asked to read a prompt and write an essay based on the prompt. The prompt may ask students to analyze, explain or persuade. Students can expect to encounter questions about;
- Developing ideas for an essay,
- Organizing those ideas into a logical sequence,
- Using supporting examples and details effectively,
- Considering readers’ needs and points of view,
- Explaining relationships between facts or concepts,
- Being aware of a speaker’s attitude, and
- Using language that is clear and direct.
Before writing the Compass Test, you must select the best answer for a given situation. Our English tutoring program includes practice with multiple-choice questions, sentence correction, sentence structure, and transitions to help you fully understand the ins and outs of writing.
Our tutors are familiar with the Learning Standards and can help you plan your essay or choose an appropriate academic style.
Our Compass team has been trained to help you nail down your essay responses on the test day. We will refresh you on the basics of writing and help you focus on the most important parts of essay writing.
Reading Comprehension
The reading comprehension section of the Compass Test measures a student’s ability to read texts and use evidence from those texts to answer questions. The passages are drawn from various disciplines, including social studies, the humanities, science, and technology. They are intended to represent a variety of educational levels and a wide range of reading styles.
In this test, you will have long and short passages from many different types of books, such as novels to textbooks or from Shakespeare’s work to a research paper on medical discovery.
The test includes passages from various genres, including science-fiction, non-fiction, and poetry. Reading comprehension includes questions on;
- Identifying information,
- Determining the main idea,
- Making inferences,
- Drawing conclusions,
- Summarizing text,
- Understanding cause-effect relationships, or
- Compare/contrast relationships between two or more texts.
It will be beneficial to have an English teacher tutor who can help find evidence in long passages and do practice testing on the Compass Test format. Our tutors will help you go into the test knowing exactly what to expect and how to best approach each question.
We know that students of all levels perform better with practice; we offer timed readings which can be correlated directly to your academic level.
English – Vocabulary
The English vocabulary section of the Compass Test is made up of both multiple-choice and written questions. It has three parts:
- Words and Phrases,
- Sentence Completions, and
- Sentence Sense.
Test takers will need to be familiar with a wide range of words – their meanings, synonyms and antonyms, nuances, word relationships, common idiomatic expressions, and proper usage.
It is essential to learn about academic vocabulary and word roots (Greek, Latin, etc.) to understand the meaning of certain words that you may not encounter very often.
The Compass Test also contains words from a wide range of subject areas, including humanities, social studies, natural sciences, etc. Test tutoring in English will familiarize you with these terms and help you remember their meanings.
Science
Although the Compass Test does not contain a specific section dedicated to science, several passages may deal with scientific concepts and theories. If you need help understanding what you read about complex concepts, do not hesitate to contact us for Test tutoring in science.
Our knowledgeable tutors can help you understand scientific passages and demonstrate how to apply this knowledge in a multiple-choice context.
Social Studies
The science section of the Compass Test measures a student’s ability to read graphs and charts. The learning standards emphasize content areas such as history, geography, economics, etc.
Test tutoring for social studies will familiarize you with these concepts and allow you to practice answering questions on them.
English as a Second Language
English as a Second Language is required of all international students, regardless of English-speaking background. Any student who did not learn to speak, read, and write in English before coming to the United States will need to take ESL courses.
Undergraduate ESL classes focus on writing and reading skills such as essay writing, synopsis/outlines, synthesis of information, and summarizing. Our instructors are available to assist you with your studies for ESL exams.

Your FAQs Answered
What is Compass Assessment Test?
The Compass Test is a standardized test used to measure academic achievement. It is primarily administered as a placement test for incoming first-year students at the University of California campuses.
It may also be used as a high school exit exam to determine students’ eligibility for admission into college. It usually covers math and reading skills that students have developed over time through their education.
The compulsory version of the Compass contains four sections: reading, writing and language, mathematics, and a combination of the first three sections. In 2011, UC began administering an optional Extended Compass Test that includes two additional sections: science reasoning and critical thinking.
Can I Take the Compass Test Online?
All sections of the Compass Test can be taken online through ALEKS. The ALEKS test covers all four sections included in the compulsory version of the Compass: reading and writing and language, mathematics, science reasoning, and combined reading/writing/language with mathematics.
A student who decides to take only one section of the Compass – for example, mathematics – can take the test on paper or online, depending on the computer access available.
How Do I Prepare for the Tutor Test?
Students are expected to have taken algebra, geometry, two years of a foreign language, and biology. If you do not meet this criterion for any section of the Compass test, it is recommended that you study at least one year ahead in each subject.
For example, if you are taking chemistry as your last science class before taking the Compass test, you should take biology, chemistry, and physics classes to prepare for the science section of Compass.
What Are Good Compass Test Scores?
There are no specific cut-off scores when it comes to Compass. The test is designed so that the lowest scores indicate when students need extra academic support in preparation for college, while the highest scores show students who are ready to take on university academics.
How Long Is the Compass Test?
The Compass test typically takes about six hours to complete. Students are expected to complete the test in one sitting, without breaks or leaving the testing room.
Can You Use a Scientific Calculator on the Compass Test?
No, a scientific calculator is not allowed on the Compass test. Only a basic four-function calculator is allowed.
What Is Act and Sat Test?
The ACT and SAT are standardized tests used for college admissions in the United States. They can be taken online or with a paper copy, depending on the availability of testing centers and computers.
Scores from these exams cannot be substituted for other exams, even if you plan to attend a college that does not require an exam score for admission.
