Writing

The writing section of the Compass Test is essentially an essay test. It includes both essay and short answer questions. Students will be asked to read a prompt and write an essay based on the prompt. The prompt may ask students to analyze, explain or persuade. Students can expect to encounter questions about;

• Developing ideas for an essay,
• Organizing those ideas into a logical sequence,
• Using supporting examples and details effectively,
• Considering readers’ needs and points of view,
• Explaining relationships between facts or concepts,
• Being aware of a speaker’s attitude, and

In this test, you will have long and short passages from many different types of books, such as novels to textbooks or from Shakespeare’s work to a research paper on medical discovery.

The test includes passages from various genres, including science-fiction, non-fiction, and poetry. Reading comprehension includes questions on;

• Identifying information,
• Determining the main idea,
• Making inferences,
• Drawing conclusions,
• Summarizing text,
• Understanding cause-effect relationships, or
• Compare/contrast relationships between two or more texts.

The English vocabulary section of the Compass Test is made up of both multiple-choice and written questions. It has three parts:

Test takers will need to be familiar with a wide range of words – their meanings, synonyms and antonyms, nuances, word relationships, common idiomatic expressions, and proper usage.

It is essential to learn about academic vocabulary and word roots (Greek, Latin, etc.) to understand the meaning of certain words that you may not encounter very often.

Science
